Functional Gut Disorders & IBS
Why diarrhoea happens
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gut disorders affect 1 in 7 people in the UK. For those with IBS-D (diarrhoea-predominant IBS), the gut is hypersensitive to triggers. This leads to chronic diarrhoea, urgency, bloating, pain, and exhaustion.
Current treatments are limited. Loperamide slows the bowel but does not help urgency. Antispasmodics only mask pain. Many patients turn to restrictive FODMAP diets, which compromise nutrition and social life.

The lived experience
On Reddit’s IBS forum, a 29-year-old wrote:
“I was in the toilet 6 times a day, couldn’t go out for meals, and had constant anxiety. It was ruining my social life and relationship.”
